It turns out there has been a problem with the shipping rates on the Light My Fire Candles website. The problem should be corrected now. Everything should be shipping at a flat rate of $6.10. If you are getting a rate different from that, please email me to let me know.

I currently do not offer any type of expedited shipping because I make most products when you order them. If you need something super fast, then please email me and we can work together to be sure I have all the supplies on hand to make and ship your order immediately. Otherwise, it takes a few days!

A Moment of Reflection and Warm Wishes

Merry Christmas, Yuletide Greetings and Happy Holidays
Still a week away. Goodness this year has gone fast! I can't promise that I will get a chance to post again before Christmas. Brewing up candles and incense, along with my personal family traditions. Yay for baking cookies and the Festival of Lights at the Cincinnati Zoo!

Everything is so much more fun now that my oldest rug rat is old enough to know a little better about what's going on. He goes to bed every night worried that Santa is going to come and eat all of his cookies though. Somehow I think he'll be ok with sharing his cookies with Santa once he sees how everything works. I have to admit, one of my favorite thing about having kids is finding joy and excitement in everything again when I see things through their eyes. How often I walk by Christmas trees without even pausing to notice. When my babies are with me, it's all "Woooooow! Look Mommy!" Makes me stop and take notice. Finding beauty and excitement in things I've come to take for granted is a Christmas gift all by itself.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday. Make memories. Love one another. And never take for granted the things that are important to you.

Uses for Fragrance Oils

Have you ever fell in love with a scent and wondered how you could use it? Let's be creative! Fragrance oils can be used for all sorts of things. Let's start with the basics.

Use a few drops in an oil warmer. Fill the bowl with water. Add a few drops of oil. Light your tealight underneath and enjoy as the fragrance fills your room.

Wear it. A dab on the wrist or neck or other pulse points make for a wonderful perfume. And since fragrance oils are oil based, not alcohol based like most perfumes, they will last a lot longer. Use caution when using citrus or cinnamon type oils as these can be too harsh for some skin.

Make your own scented products. Fragrance oils can be used when making soaps, lotions, or candles.

Fragrance oils are only limited by your imagination! Let's add scent to everything!

Add a few drops to your furnace filter. Scent will be wafted through your whole house.

Refresh potpourri. If your pretty pressed petals have lost their scent, put them in a big plastic bag, add some fragrance oil, shake it up and they'll be like new.

Put some oil on cotton balls and throw them in your vaccuum cleaner bag to make your carpet smell fresh.

If you have a candle that doesn't have a very strong scent, light it and let burn for a few minutes. Carefully add a couple drops of fragrance oil into the wax pool.

Add a few drops to a wash cloth or cloth napkin and put in your dryer when you dry your clothes.

Creating Mood

As I get ready to inundate this page with scent descriptions, I want to get you ready for my artistic written interpretation of the scents I carry.

Lighting a candle, or an incense stick, or an oil warmer is not just about smell. It's about creating mood. Not only by the fragrance you choose to release into your home, but also by the medium you choose. Candle light can be very calming, relaxing, sensual, just about anything. I find incense smoke to be great for meditation because not only do I get the fragrance to relax me, but watching the smoke rise and curl fascinates me to the point of forgetting the daily grind.

The fragrances themselves often evoke a mood rather than just being something that smells nice. Orange creamsicle may bring to mind a hot summer day from when you were a kid. Margarita may remind you of a fun night out with friends. Any number of scents may trigger memories or experiences that you can't even place. All you know is that smelling it takes you to your own personal happy place.

Moods and memories are different for everyone. That is the reason why Light My Fire Candles gives you such a vast selection of fragrances to choose from. I love every one of them. Each for it's own reason. Many people ask me what MY favorite is. And everyone who asks probably gets a different answer. So many are favorites. It depends on my mood is at the time as to what my answer will be. It depends on what I've been doing, or where I've recently been. All of these factors go into what is contained within a single magical scent.

As I create my scent descriptions, I'm relying on my own moods when I experience the particular fragrance. I can only do a couple a day at the absolute most because I inundate my senses with the scent. It results in a highly personal description of my interpretation of the mood. It can be very hard to put a scent into words. I try to create a larger picture than just describing the smell. I hope my vision can help you choose a scent you love and create your own bliss.

I'm working diligently to provide you with detailed descriptions of each and everyone of them! I do apologize that my web developing skills are lacking, therefore you will need to access them from this blog page for a while. And speaking of my web developing skills . . . I'm also working on getting together more and better pictures of my products.

Candle Myth: Color and Scent

Does the color of a candle tell you how strong the scent will be? Do darker colors smell stronger? Do lighter colors have less scent?

NO, NO, NO! Color has nothing to do with the scent. When I make candles, I melt the wax. Then once it reaches the right temperature, I add the color, and then the scent. Each item has nothing to do with the other. They are completely separate decisions.

In fact, the wax can only hold a certain amount of additives. Therefore adding more color could make it possible that the wax won't hold as much scent. But even this isn't a good sign of scent because different colorants have different intensities. Light My Fire Candles are always scented very strongly. They are designed to be burned and fill your home with wonderful fragrance. I think the tendency for lightly colored candles to have light scent has more to do with the particular fragrance. For example, Egyptian Musk by it's nature is a very light scent. So I also color it lightly. It just seems appropriate.

Some Changes!

If you've been coming to my site, then you might notice some changes going on. In particular I'm trying to list the scented items separately instead of in a drop down list. This will allow me to provide you with scent descriptions and more details about the way I create the product. Please be patient! This is going to take me a loooong time to finish the entire project. But not to worry. If you don't see your favorite item listed separately, then it is still available for you to order it the old fashioned way from the drop down list.

Example: "Incense Sticks" used to have an option to order any of the 150 different scents. Just select from a drop down list. Now . . . each scent is going to have it's own listing. So if you don't see Baby Powder Incense in the drop down, then you can find it listed all by itself on the incense page.

I apologize for any short term inconvenience this may cause. But once everything is set up, it will make it really easy to find what you are looking for. Plus, if you want to order Baby Powder Incense and Baby Powder Votives, then you can simply input 'baby powder' in the search box, and you will see all of the different products I have to offer in the baby powder scent.

Mommy Entrepeneur

One of the biggest challenges that I find myself up against as a small business owner is being able to find time for everything. This is a common problem for anyone running a small business. When you do EVERYTHING yourself, there's a feeling of needing to get everything done NOW. And before I was a mommy, I ran myself ragged getting as much done as possible.

Well, that's definitely much harder now. I still run myself ragged, but at the end of the day, it's just impossible to get even a fraction of the same stuff done. So, I end up chasing the kid around all day, then staying up all night. When do I get to sleep? To that my answer is . . . what is sleep?

I'm currently 6 months pregnant with number 2. Am I crazy? Yeah. The exhaustion has me doing a lot more work on the computer rather than active running around. I still make everything. The votives, pillar candles, incense, fragrance oils, packaging everything up nice and pretty. But my candle "factory" is in the basement, and even when Dawson, my one year old wonderful and rambunctious little guy lets me step away for a few minutes to play in hot wax, it's still rough running up and down the stairs as quickly and as often as I need to.

But there's certainly not time to do nothing. So I end up playing and chasing Dawson out of the dog food and changing diapers all day. Then once Daddy gets home, we all have dinner together and maybe watch a little tv or play a game. Then I'm off to work. Which means I zone out on the computer for a while working on things like marketing, website design, planning, etc.

It's a lot of work, but I love it all, and I really wouldn't have it any other way! Except maybe a couple extra hours of sleep at night every once in a while.

Yum, Spiced Pear!

I just poured some Spiced Pear candles, and boy does my house smell good! Although I've carried this scent for a while, this is the first time I've made candles with it. And I have to say, I think it has become one of my favorites. Sweet and tart. Smells yummy and homey without making me too hungry. I'm loving it! I hope it becomes a good seller just so I get to make them all the time!

Phase 1 of my internet store. So exciting. After having had a standard information web page for years, it's so nice to have it up and running as an actual shoppable store. And now that the initial set up is complete, it's becoming a lot more fun to work on adding additional details. Getting my blog integrated into the rest of the website is a wonderful bonus for me! I thought I was going to have to start over with a new blog, but I quickly figured out a way to incorporate the two pieces together.

Some improvements that you can expect to be seeing in the near future . . .

Improved product photographs. I'm terrible at doing them myself. The ones that turned out nicely were an accident!

Newsletters. I want to have weekly newsletters emailed. These will contain information about special sales and member only products.

Increased style. Let me be honest, many of the elements of my store are currently very . . . functional. Plain. Boring. If I could draw a picture on paper and do some magic to put it on my site, everything would be much prettier. However, that magic is HTML, and I don't have those skills yet.

Promotional sales codes. There are some lurking around already. I will occasionally post some here. Sometimes in my newsletters.

Interesting and Innovative content. Not every post I do will be incessant rambling about how happy I am. I will be putting together some articles on different things.

Video content - I will be making commercials. And a tour of my "factory." And some style and decorating guides.

So check back often! I have many things planned, and I look forward to sharing my ideas, and also to hearing your feedback. Please feel free to leave comments!

My new website is up and running! I'm so excited! Volusion.com has a wonderful product to help any business owner get started with a retail website. It's not easy. But with hard work and and a lot of frustration, it's finally here! I still have to add bunches of pictures, and there are many things I want to add to give it some style.
